Google for School Leaders
  • What does it mean to be a Google school?

    • We start from the basics and take a high level look at what it means to be a Google school

    • We explain how Google Apps for Education works, what Apps are included in the ‘core suite’ and what other ‘non core’ Google Apps you can use

    • We cover a lot of basic stuff to be sure all attendees are starting from the same level such as: Do you need a Google Server? Can you use Google in your school if you are running on a MS base? Do all students need an account on your domain? Can one teacher run Google Classroom if we are not a Google School? etc. etc.

  • How can Google help me and our leadership team in our jobs?

    • This is where we get into Forms, shared Docs, research, etc. We focus in on the best practices for using Google Drive and Docs specifically for school management with specific examples of using forms, spreadsheets and more

    • We also look at using Google tools for:

      • Leadership teams

      • Accreditation (for example by CIS WASC and NEASC which is something schools go through every 5 and 10 years and with Google Apps this process has become much more efficient and effective)

      • Work flows, meeting minutes

      • Structure and Google Drive folder expectations and protocols

Entrepreneurship for students (and teachers)

In this 'off topic' session we take a look at entrepreneurship in the new economy, and how both teachers and students can get involved. Dan Taylor is the founder and Director of AppsEvents, a Google for Education partner and organizer of summits and training worldwide. AppsEvents is is a completely virtual organisation with no offices and no full time employees that runs events most weeks quite literally across the globe. We look at this example and others of how people are building a new kind of business, often in their spare time using web-based tools. In particular we look at:

1. Teacher entrepreneurs - many teachers who are building businesses in their spare time and the types of things they are doing 2.The philosophy fom the book 'The four hour work week' by Tim Ferriss and how we use the 80/20 rule and Tim's 'DEAL - Definition, Elimination, Automation and Liberation' to run things

2. The tools to do it: How you can manage a business and promote yourself completely online - Almost entireluy using Google Drive, Sites, Hangouts, Plus and YouTube

3. The network: How to build a business with a team centric approach ....plus a lot more

Google Expeditions - explore the world in virtual reality!
Google Expeditions is Google's virtual reality platform for the classroom. With a basic smartphone and a 'Google Cardboard' students (and teachers) can be spirited away from the classroom to a world underwater, or see CERN's hadron collider, or visit historic buildings in England, or be transported to a royal project in Thailand....the choices are endless.

In this session, I will introduce you to Expeditions and how to get setup. Together we will experience how transformative VR can be and we will also look at how we can use Expeditions to enhance the learning experience.

Please note, it is a requirement that attendees have a fairly recent smartphone (all iPhones and most modern Android phones)  to participate in this session. There are a limited number of Cardboards available so this will be on a first come basis - although people can pair up.

This session is meant to show teachers that anyone can code and how important coding should be in your classroom.  It will also introduce a variety of different robots that teachers can use to teach their students how fun it is to have their coding skills translate into something that they can guide and see in action.  Teaching students how to overcome challenges through coding and robots not only gives them the skill of learning to code but also the attitude that 21st Century learners need, the attitude that making mistakes is the way to learn!
